Thursday Update:
We had a very fun and productive EVA today! Our mission support team back in Georgia devised a scavenger hunt for Kyle, Jenny, and Jackie. Mission support picked three locations for the crew members to visit, and the crew members used the latitude and longitude coordinates with their GPS systems to find the destinations. They simulated several emergency scenarios that could occur on an EVA, including a dust storm and a serious injury. Thank goodness they were just simulations!
Question of the day: How hot was it today at the Mars Desert Research Station?
Answer: Today, the temperature rose to 75 F- by far the hottest day yet!
Friday Update:
Our big task for today was placing six wind anemometers outside during an EVA. Thanks to some help from the INSPIRE community, we knew just where to place them! The anemometers will collect data for the next twenty-four hours to help us determine where to place our wind turbine.
Saturday Update:
We went on an EVA today to collect plant samples from the surrounding desert area. There aren't very many plants at all here in the deesrt, but we were able to find three different plant types to sample. We will look at these plants tomorrow under the microscope to learn more
about the plants that grow in here in the Utah desert. We're expecting our first rainstorm tonight
so we're making lots of preparations to the hab to make sure we stay dry!
Question: If it takes six months to get to Mars, how do you get bread to Mars without the bread
going stale?
Answer: You can't! That's why we make our own bread in during our Mars simulation.
