Another Update from Mars Desert Research Station!

By Lisa Thornsberry, Georgia Tech MDRS Crew 115

From Sunday-
Today, we had two EVAs planned: one to set up our wind turbine, and one to collect soil samples to use with our autonomous planter. Unfortunately, both were cancelled due to storms in the area because we did not want to risk the safety of the crew. We were disappointed, but a big part of being in simulation is being flexible to last-minute changes in plans. We were able to catch up on some work in the hab, and we're looking forward to completing the two EVAs as soon as the weather clears up.
This is our hab module taken from our remote surveillance aircraft
Question of the day: How do crew members communicate with one another while wearing spacesuits during EVAs?
Answer: We use radios to talk with one another. Each radio can transmit and receive voice messages. They are similar to walkie-talkies, but much more powerful. We each had to become licensed and certified to operate these radios.
