Hi! I'm Sally and I was a participant in the Residential Internship at Langley Research Center last summer. I would like to give you some tips for your experience over the next few weeks! Even though I was at Langley, I'm sure that this advice can be used at all centers.
9 Things You Should Know/Remember for this Summer:
- Dress professionally. Your exact attire will depend on your job, but it's always good to have some khaki pants and polos around. :) If you are working in an office, be sure to have a light jacket because it can get a bit cold!
- Exude confidence! You are working in a professional environment, so be sure to have good posture and look people in the eye when they are speaking do you. Remembering to shake hands goes a long way!
- Networking is key! There will be people around you with many different occupations and connections. If they aren't busy, take the time to ask people about their jobs. You may find new interests and maybe your future career! People at NASA tend to be passionate and excited about their jobs, so don't be afraid to ask! And you never know when your new connections will come in handy!
- Although the work is important, be sure to take some time to see the center that you are working at. Ask to have a tour of a few facilities at some point over the summer, or all of them if you can. There's a ton of cool things to learn and see!
- If you don't know already, be sure to learn how to do your own laundry before you get there. Trust me.
- Be sure and write a thank you note to your mentor and anyone else who helped you over the summer.
- Remember your mentor when asking for college recommendations.
- Bring a camera and keep it with you as often as possible. You'll be glad you did!
- Most importantly, HAVE FUN!! You are about to have the best summer of your life. You're going to see, do, and learn awesome things and make a ton of new friends!
~ Sally :)
