LiveChat Roundup: Oct. 6, 2011

By Jim Gerard, INSPIRE Education Specialist, KSC, FL

Our LiveChat was heating up last night as 151 OLC members were on hand to hear a presentation on 'Studying the Weather of the 21st Century' by Goddard Institute of Space Science's Ron Miller.  Dr. Miller works at the GISS office in downtown New York City, and uses satellite and ground based data to create climate models to help predict the trends in climate change.  While this topic does have a political angle, Dr. Miller stuck to the science (as we will in our Discussion Board!) as he shared the data and analysis coming from the GISS.

Do you want to be part of a LiveChat?  First you have to sign up on the Discussion Board.  Two opportunities are open right now: a Center Chat on Goddard Space Flight Center on Tuesday, Oct.11 at 3pm CT, and Oceans, on Thursday Oct. 13 at 8pm CT.  Click on either link or both and leave a post titled "Sign me up".  After the sign up closes (when we reach our room limit or two hours before the chat), you will receive an email reminder with extra instructions.  At the appointed time, navigate to the LiveChat room list (OLC>Connect>LiveChat) and the link for your chat should be in blue.  If not, you may be too early* (the chat opens 15 minutes before the event begins), or you may just need to refresh your browser.  Don't forget to turn off your pop-up blocker!  We have produced a short video tutorial to step you through the procedure.  If all else fails, send a description of your problem to nasainspire@okstate.edu.

What if you miss a chat?  The next morning you can usually find it available in the LiveChat archive on the LiveChat room list page.  The same file will also be placed in the Home page archive the following Monday, along with a version transcribed as a .mov and a .mp3 file that can be downloaded to your mobile device.  Don't forget to watch until the very end, when the password is given to allow you to take the quiz.  25 points are available for each LiveChat.

We're trying to increase the number of students that we can invite into our LiveChats, so we appreciate your patience and cooperation as we test out some new procedures.  Our objective is, as always, to connect the students of the INSPIRE Online Learning Community to NASA subject matter experts wherever they may be.

*Or too late!  Remember, all time listed on the OLC are Central Time.  Why? Since our home base is Oklahoma State University, that is where the server that supports the INSPIRE OLC is located.  We also serve students across 7 time zones (not including Guam and our overseas members), so Central Time is, well, central.  Please figure out for your location whether you need to add or subtract to find out when our events start.
