Three Cool Apps for the iPhone

I've heard from many OLC students that you have an iPhone or iPod Touch.  There are many apps available to help connect to NASA and I'd like to highlight three of them, all free.

NASA - The best way to keep up on all parts of NASA's many missions, this app offers up to date launch schedules, images, videos, and updates.  You can even check on and search for ISS sighting opportunities. I've got this app on my iPhone first page!

3D Sun - You are at the beach when your iPhone dings.  You check it and find that a major flare has erupted form the Sun.  Oh no!  Should you seek shelter?  No you are all right, but you can rotate the 3D image of the Sun  (courtesy of the dual STEREO satellites observing the Sun) to see the flare is erupting harmlessly into space.  Scan it under different wavelengths, watch videos of comets falling into the Sun, and read news articles about Soar events.

NASA Lunar Electric Rover Simulator - This is a somewhat easy top-down scrolling game.  You are given control of a NASA LER (Lunar Electric Rover) to accomplish increasingly difficult assignments.  Not as graphical as a similar paid app, but this will provide a little understanding of NASA's former lunar plans.

All three apps areavailable for the iTunes App Store or click on the links above for direct access.  Again, all these apps are free, so if you are asked to pay anything you are not at the right app.  Have fun!

  1. I recently got the NASA LERS and I like the app because I was able to learn about different equipment that is used on the lunar. I also enjoyed the game.
